Get out your Trapper Keepers!
In honor of “back to school” season, we wanted to share some of our favorite back to school episodes of our favorite shows because we loooooove nostalgia. So, without further ado, feast your eyes on these happy memories…
“Buffy goes to college” is my favorite “back to school” pick, even though we have a few to choose from through our days in the Hellmouth. I think this episode did a really amazing job of capturing that disoriented feeling you get when you start a new school year, and especially when that new year includes a new school entirely. Buffy wandered aimlessly through the campus of UC Sunnydale trying to find her place in a brand new environment, and it didn’t help that her roommate was a total buzzkill. After feeling lost it seemed only fitting that in order for Buffy to find her way again she needed to stumble on a campus vamp nest. Ultimately, Buffy learned that she could, in fact, handle growing up while also still kicking Sunday’s ass and reclaiming her place as the “Class Protector.”
I love this episode… for all its meta-charm. Sam and Dean head back to school in this nod towards fangirls (like me), complete with original musical numbers and a cover of “Carry On Wayward Son.” The scene is set in St. Alphonso’s Academy, where the students are putting on a play based on the adventures of the Winchesters as written by Chuck. You’ve got some high school drama and some awesome Sam/Dean B.M. (that’s boy melodrama, according to Marie, not a poop scene).
Look out Hogwarts, because the S.H.I.E.L.D. Science and Technology Academy has got Hermiones galore in this “back to school” episode! The Team has been called to the Academy to investigate a potential “bad seed” that nearly froze a student to death in the swimming pool. This episode was especially cool (pun intended) as it gave us a glimpse into the legend status of Fitz and Simmons, where we already knew we had legends in Coulson, May, and Ward. Revered by the students for their sheer genius, Fitz and Simmons get nostalgic as they walk the halls of the Academy and visit the boiler room bar. The only thing this episode was missing was the cliché “this place seems smaller than I remember.”
